Introduction
In GRP applications for bund linings, chemical resistance and seamless containment are paramount to protect critical infrastructure from spills and leaks. Healthcare facilities, where operational continuity is non-negotiable, require solutions that withstand hydrocarbon exposure while adhering to stringent environmental and safety standards such as BS EN 13121 for GRP tanks and vessels.
This application note details a specialized installation completed in January 2025 at the National Blood Transfusion Service in Llantrisant: a fuel oil bund lining designed to support the site’s emergency generator during power failures. Employing the Strandek chemical-resistant GRP system, the project ensured robust secondary containment with efficient on-site execution.

Project Overview
The National Blood Transfusion Service in Llantrisant maintains vital blood processing and storage operations that depend on uninterrupted power. To mitigate risks from potential fuel oil leaks in the event of a generator failure during outages, a dedicated bund lining was required to provide reliable secondary containment, compliant with Environment Agency guidelines for pollution prevention.
Site preparation was methodical to achieve optimal substrate conditions. Concrete surfaces were thoroughly power washed at 150 bar to eliminate debris, oils, and residues, followed by application of a moisture curing primer to promote strong mechanical and chemical bonding. The primary lining was then applied in situ via hand lamination using the Strandek chemical-resistant GRP system: a 600 g/m² layer. The process yielded a seamless, monolithic barrier over the bund’s full area, with integrated coving fillets for enhanced durability at junctions.
A UV-stabilized topcoat ( polyester) was applied post-cure to provide additional abrasion resistance and a professional finish. Throughout, works were conducted under controlled access to minimize disruption to ongoing facility activities, completing within a 48-hour window.

Outcomes and Assurance
The installed bund lining delivers impermeability and chemical integrity, safeguarding against fuel oil ingress and supporting the site’s emergency protocols.
