Versatile and adaptable, it is used to repair and refurbish existing roofs. More durable fibreglass designs can be used to accommodate foot traffic and equipment placement.

Quality by design

Fibreglass is an ideal material for aerospace applications due to its superior waterproofing and mechanical properties. This composite material is a blend of resin and glass fibre reinforcement which, when cured, forms a structure that is incredibly strong with a degree of flexibility to accommodate structural movement, UV- and water-resistant. These properties make fibreglass an ideal choice for the construction industry and perfect as a flat roof membrane.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are fibreglass (GRP) flat roofs long-lasting?

Yes, a correctly installed fibreglass flat roof will last 30+ years.

How much do fibreglass flat roofs cost?

Approximately the same as other flat roofing systems. Since 1976, we’ve found fibreglass roofs to out-last rubber and other sheeted membranes, so the lifetime cost is cheaper versus less durable flat roofing systems.

Why is fibreglass better than EPDM or PVC single ply?

In short, it is much more durable – it is resistant to tearing so tolerates foot traffic, is extremely hard-wearing and it is puncture resistant.

Why does fibreglass have a bad reputation?

This is almost always down to poor installation quality. Applicators that are not properly trained or do not install a fibreglass system correctly cause flat roofing systems to leak.

How can I choose a reliable flat roofing installer?

Look for: 1) a long, successful track record, 2) insurance-backed guarantees, 3) accreditations and 4) a good technical understanding.

What is the Built GRP Fibreglass Roof System?

Built GRP is an independently tested fibreglass roofing system. Demonstrating superior mechanical properties and excellent waterproofing, it offers extensive guarantees and an approved contractors list. There are two tyes: S600 (single layer laminate) for standard applications and the D600 (dual layer) for more demanding applications expecting foot traffic.

Is fibreglass any good as a roofing material?

Yes, fibreglass has a high strength-to-weight ratio, long-term durability and waterproofing potential as well as excellent abrasion resistance and impact resistance. Unlike other membranes, it can tolerate foot traffic. It is also versatile, meaning it can be applied to a range of substrates, from timber to concrete and plywood.

Is fibreglass stronger than metal?

Yes, some fibreglass composites exhibit very high strength-to-weight and modulus-to-weight ratios comparable to some metallic materials.
